Every morning we get up, wash our face, go in the shower and think nothing of it. But have you ever wondered how the water we get to our homes everyday arrives cleanly every time? That’s where backflow devices come in! Arriving from a regulated pure source, such as a filtration plant, the water in our home is protected by backflow devices. How do they protect our water supply? Hypothetically, when a backflow occurs, meaning the waste water we just disposed flows back into the clean water supply, a backflow device would prevent this from occurring.
How backflow preventers help in detail
Normally, when there is adequate pressure in the water line, going out and coming in, the water will continue to flow in the correct direction. If the pressure drops, pipes freeze or other issues arise, the waste water would fail to continue flowing in the correct direction and could easily backflow into the main line.
At this point, we introduce the actual anti-backflow devices which can come in several forms but all exist to perform the task of working hard to prevent the contaminated water from ever coming into contact with the clean supply. They will block and reverse the path of the dirty water so that it goes to where it should. Some of the common backflow devices that are available include double check valves, air gap valves, vacuum breakers, and lastly, reduced pressure detectors and valves.

My plumbing system is on the fritz, dirty water is coming in every so often. Is it the backflow?

Definitely get it checked out

I had no idea how import backflow devices were
